Lip Fillers | What You Need to Know About Lip Fillers

Fillers are a cosmetic procedure that help fill in the lines and wrinkles we start to see developing on our face. Hyaluronic acid is a natural ingredient we find in the skin, however as we age, we lose more and more of it. It is responsible for maintaining the moisture in our skin that keeps it plumped up and filled in.

Hydration, volume and elasticity are all responsible for keeping us looking more youthful and healthier. In our bodies the production of Hyaluronic acid and collagen may decrease as time goes by but we can add it back in to give us more youthful, plumper and glowing skin. Without adding it back in we will see an increase in fine lines, wrinkles, texture changes, skin laxity and drooping and loss of fullness and volume. Fillers help address these areas. Lip fillers in particular can add back volume as well as add even more volume than we had to begin with.

We use the very best product

The brand of filler that we use at Edmonton Dermatology is Restylane. It is from a family of products that smooths away wrinkles leaving the face with a more defined contour. It boasts of near immediate results. This clear gel is a formulation of Hyaluronic acid that acts like the natural HA found in the skin. It fills fine lines and wrinkles from moderate to severe cases.

The lips are also enhanced and filled in a subtle way so they look and feel as natural as possible. Where you choose to apply this treatment is something that is discussed in more detail when you come in for a complimentary consultation. The expert injector will help you create the look you want as well as confirm you are a prime candidate for this procedure.

Lot of things to consider when you get fillers

There are many things to consider when deciding who will perform your lip filler injections. You want to be very careful on choosing an expert who is not only well trained on a regular basis but also has a lot of experience doing injections. The expert injectors at Edmonton Dermatology study your face and its contours using their extensive knowledge of anatomy.

They are trained in aesthetics to create a beautiful as well as natural result with filler injections. Dermatologists and plastic surgeons train heavily on the facial anatomy and how to reconstruct it to be aesthetically pleasing. When choosing your expert injector do not choose on price but rather the reputation of who is treating you.

There is no set time period

The length of the appointment to have lip fillers or any fillers on the face done varies depending on the amount used, the number of locations being treated within one visit and the tolerance of the patient to pain. Lip fillers typically last at least six months, however some people have boasted of considerably longer results like twelve to eighteen months. After this time, the Hyaluronic acid is completely broken down by your body. This non-surgical treatment has low to no downtime after it is performed.

The most common negative things about getting lip fillers are the pain involved and the bruising, bleeding and swelling that goes along with being poked by a needle. The swelling can last up to a week but in most cases is diminished within 24 hours. There may be blood at the injection sight but this is minimal and nothing to be alarmed about. Obviously, there are always rare complications that can occur such as scarring and lip asymmetry. Some of which disappear after the filler wears off.

Prevent poor injections

Sometimes the filler can be injected poorly and look like little bumps under the skin. This will eventually be broken down by the body or can be reversed to be dissolved quicker. If you have too much filler injected you can stretch the skin leaving you with permanent damage in that way. The only way to fix this is to have the excess stretched skin removed by a plastic surgeon. Other than the things mentioned already in very rare cases, there are little to no risks for permanent damage to the lips.

When you compare Botox to fillers you will likely feel what most of our clients’ experience. There is a lot more pain involved with injecting fillers than there is Botox. There is a lot more time spent at the injection site injecting the fluid of a filler which can add to the discomfort. Additionally, with so many possible sites in a smaller area to be treated it can start to feel more and more painful the more sites you inject at. The good news is filler lasts much longer than Botox so you don’t have to do it nearly as often.

Some things you should know beforehand

There are some things you should be aware of before you have lip or face fillers injected. Typically, when you come in for an initial consult, we will go through the things you should avoid before having fillers done. But a good list to keep in mind is to avoid aspirin and ibuprofen as well as supplements like omega 3 oils and alcohol.

After you have had fillers done be sure to not rub the area for four hours. Again, avoid blood thinners and alcohol for up to 48 hours. Avoid intense heat like hot yoga, hot tubs and tanning beds for the same day you have had the filler injected. You can carefully apply sunscreen and makeup ninety minutes after injections are done.

Be patient!

Fillers, like Botox do not give instantaneous results. The most noticeable results can be seen within one month after injection. The full integration of the filler product happens around the three-month mark. This is when the full results are seen and after this time the body starts to break down the HA.
